Replacement hood hinges were fitted in 2022.
This example was finished in Candyapple Red (T) from the factory and was repainted under previous ownership. Additional features include white GT500KR side stripes, an antenna, a silver-painted tail panel, and a Cobra Jet fuel cap and fender badges. The power-operated white soft top was replaced in 2022, and it features a folding glass window.
The 15″ Shelby 10-spoke alloy wheels are mounted with 215/60 front and 225/60 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. A steel spare wheel with an older radial tire is mounted in the trunk. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. The shock absorbers were also uprated compared to a standard Mustang. Power-assisted steering and front disc brakes were equipped from the factory, and replacement front brake lines were fitted in 2022 along with rebuilds of the brake booster and master cylinder.
The cabin features bucket seats that were fitted with new foam and retrimmed in Saddle vinyl in 2022. Matching upholstery extends to the rear bench, door panels, and center console. The Interior Décor Group added simulated wood-grain appliqués on the dash, center console, and door panels, while Shelby-specific equipment includes a Cobra Jet dash badge, an embossed armrest, and lap belts with inertia-reel front shoulder harnesses. A Ford/Philco AM radio is fitted in the dash, and Cobra-branded floor mats line the floors. The car is equipped with air conditioning, and the HVAC system was also overhauled in 2022.
The two-spoke steering wheel with a Cobra hub and a horn ring is mounted on a tilt-away steering column ahead of a 140-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The Visibility Group package included under-dash courtesy lights and illumination in the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment along with a glovebox lock. The five-digit odometer shows 58k miles, approximately 4k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 428ci Cobra Jet V8 features cast-aluminum valve covers with “Cobra Le Mans” lettering and was factory rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The engine was removed in 2022 and fitted with a Holley 4150 735-cfm four-barrel carburetor with a March 1968 date stamping as well as factory-style emissions equipment, gaskets, spark plugs, a thermostat, a voltage regulator, and a starter solenoid. A replacement wiring harness, battery, and cables were also fitted. A reproduction Autolite battery is included in the sale.
The engine block shows a date code of 8E29, which translates to May 29, 1968.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a C6 three-speed automatic transmission that is said to have been rebuilt in the 2000s. A 3.00:1 rear axle was fitted from the factory, and the fuel pump was rebuilt in 2022.
