The Sprint Speciale was designed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone following low-drag bodywork experiments and the resulting Bertone Aerodynamica Technica concepts. This example was delivered from the factory in Rosso Alfa and was repainted under previous ownership. The car is fitted with bodywork found on the first 101 Tipo 750 Sprint Speciale examples, including a floating decklid, an aluminum hood, no front bumper, thinner rear corner bumpers, and a lower, angled grille. Additional equipment includes chrome Carello headlight bezels, hood tie-down pins, a plexiglass bug shield, side marker lamps, and gold fender badges. Crease lines near the front of each fender are noted by the selling dealer. The removed windshield wiper arms are included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery.
The silver-painted steel wheels wear polished hubcaps and are mounted with 155SR15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A matching spare wheel and tire are mounted in the trunk. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel finned drums. The brake master cylinder was rebuilt in September 2022, at which time the hard lines and front wheel cylinders were replaced.
The cockpit features low-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather with red inserts. Matching door panels are fitted, and red carpets line the floors. Equipment includes hand-crank windows, a black dash pad, and a dash-mounted rearview mirror. A replacement brake light switch was installed in September 2022.
The three-spoke steering wheel frames Veglia instrumentation including a 220-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer with an inset oil pressure gauge, and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 6,600 kilometers (~4,100 miles). Total mileage is unknown.
The 1.3L twin-cam inline-four was rebuilt between January 2019 and September 2021, with work including machining of the cylinder head, a regrinding of the camshaft, a rebuild of the water pump, and an overhaul of the Weber carburetors as well as the installation of replacement valves, valve seats, and stem seals. Service records for the work can be seen in the gallery.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. A replacement clutch and flywheel were installed in September 2021 along with a transmission seal. A replacement exhaust system was fitted in 2008, and the fuel tank was also repaired in September 2021.
The Alfa Romeo Certificato di Origine shows a production date of February 15, 1961, as well as initial delivery to Lugano, Switzerland.
